Overview

Summer Intern - Temporary Full-Time/Planning

PRIMARY PURPOSE: Works on planning and urban design projects collecting information, engaging with the public, developing recommendations, creating documents, and presenting results. Huitt-Zollars does a wide range of planning work, including transportation (transit, pedestrians, bikes, and cars), land use, parks, resilience, and site planning. Our current projects include transit planning projects in Philadelphia, a parks and greenway master plan in Houston, a neighborhood plan in Houston, and a college master plan. This person may work on any of those projects, but we would value someone who has a particular interest, and a desire to further develop further skills in any of these areas. We are passionate about what we do, and we are looking for someone to join our team for a summer who is similarly excited about creating better cities for everyone.

This position is in person in the Houston Downtown office. We will consider remote work, but will likely prefer candidates who can be in person. We do not offer housing or housing allowances.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Researches existing conditions, goes on site visits, compiles data, creates maps and graphics, and summarizes issues.
  • Develops information, presentations, and other materials for the public. Creates surveys. Helps plan and organize public meetings. Facilitates discussions.
  • Works with an interdisciplinary team to define strategies and identify recommendations.
  • Develops designs for transportation networks, streets, bikeways, transit stops, urban spaces, parks, buildings, public facilities and other elements at a planning level.
  • Creates maps, plans, sections, renderings, diagrams, and other graphics.
  • Writes for reports, memos, fact sheets, and other documents.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Education: Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Planning, Architecture, Engineering, or related field

REGISTRATION:

Registration is not required. Huitt-Zollars supports its staff in pursuing and maintaining relevant registrations and credentials, including AICP, AIA, PE, and LEED.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents in English as well as the ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to respond effectively and sensitively to issues and a wide range of perspectives. Ability to work in a second language, particularly one that is spoken in the areas we work in, is welcome.

  • Fundamental software skills, and the ability to learn new software packages such as Excel, PowerPoint, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat, Rhino, GIS, and Remix. Knowledge:
