Schedule: 1/2 day on Wednesdays with eight hour shifts on Thursdays and Fridays with flexibility necessary.

Experienced user of the Microsoft Office programs including PowerPoint is essential.

Age Specific Responsibility

Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned department. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.

Summary

The Clinical Rehab Educator will provide development expertise for both licensed and unlicensed rehabilitation team members by functioning as an educator, consultant, facilitator, change agent and leader. The rehab team includes physical therapist, recreational therapist, occupational therapist, speech language pathologists, physical therapy assistants, certified occupational assistants, rehab technicians, registered nurses, nursing care assistants and health unit coordinators. The educator will support the development of the rehabilitation team, maintenance of competency, and foster empowerment through knowledge to achieve excellence in the delivery of evidenced-based rehabilitation practice. The Clinical Rehab Educator will utilize the educational process of assessment of initial and ongoing learning needs; development, planning, and implementation of programs to meet the identified needs; and evaluation of programmatic and individual competency outcomes on the learner, patient care and the organization, as well as continuing education and leadership development for those caring for individuals with physical disability and illness. The Clinical Rehab Education will act as the subject matter expert for acute care rehabilitation needs. In addition, as a member of the leadership team, the Rehabilitation Educator will serve as role model of professional conduct and plays a vital role in creating a professional climate at Mary Free Bed @ Covenant to meet our diverse needs.

At Mary Free Bed @ Covenant the rehabilitation team members are a multi-disciplinary team that collaborates to provide patient-centered care. Using a patient and family-centered care approach, each team member develops relationships with patients, families and colleagues that enhance the quality of care provided. Patient-centered care is performed with compassion and courtesy and each team member is responsible to follow departmental policies and service standards. Patient and family education are a primary focus of rehabilitation and is a critical aspect of the interdisciplinary team's efforts to assist patients to gain independence, apply adaptation strategies, and return to home.

Essential Job Responsibilities

* Facilitate the adult learning process by developing, planning, and presenting educational activities and directly or indirectly fostering the development of competence in the rehabilitation staff

o Facilitate orientation of new staff to the organization

o Develop/coordinate education plans related to initial and ongoing competency validation through assessing needs and applying theory to practice

o Design programs that enhance the practice of rehabilitation and assists the learner to comply with licensure and certification requirements

o Design programs to increase competence in a specific area of practice, such as training in the use of new equipment and review of policies, procedures, and protocols that are required for the learner to function within a specified setting

o Organize patient education activities, instructs learners as to educational strategies, and/or assists in the development of patient education materials

* Identify and secure appropriate equipment and materials required to meet the learner's needs effectively

* Responsible for considering factors related to safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning, delivering, and managing professional development activities

* Maintain educational records according to the requirements of organizational accrediting bodies and regulatory agencies

o Develop reports regarding the effectiveness of programs

o Provide a structure for disseminating appropriate educational information to individual learners, management, accrediting bodies, and regulating agencies

* Participate in the overall quality improvement process of the organization

o Demonstrate methods for gathering, evaluating, and applying research findings to rehabilitation practice

o Demonstrate how to apply theoretical information to rehabilitation practice

o Contribute to the development of the rehabilitation program's philosophy, purpose and goals

o Offer an educational perspective in all endeavors that affect rehabilitation practice and patient care outcomes

o Identify changes that should be made in rehabilitation practice using an evidence-based approach and facilitating the initiation, adoption and adaptation to change

o Act as both a formal and informal consultant, assisting with the integration of new learning into rehabilitation practice and serving as a resource by assisting the rehabilitation team in identifying problems, identifying available internal and external educational resources, and selecting educational options

* Design, create and apply research by supporting the integration of research into evidence-based practice and helping to develop staff members' knowledge and skills in the research process, as well as fostering the use of systematic evaluative research with regard to clinical, educational and managerial data

* Advocate for people with disabilities within the organization and the community at large

o Provide educational offerings that positively influence patient care outcomes

Customer Service Responsibilities

Essential Job Qualifications

* Licensure Requirements: Registered Nurse in the state of Michigan, Bachelor- or Master- prepared Therapist

* Education: Bachelor-degree required; Master-degree preferred

* Experience:

o BLS certified

o For Registered Nurses - Five years practicing as an RN; preferred acute care experience in ICU or ED, CRRN certification within two years of accepting the position

o For Therapists - Five years practicing as a therapist, preferred Inpatient Rehab experience.

o Demonstrated teaching and mentoring abilities for adult learners

o Team development and leadership skills

o Proficient computer skills; Microsoft Office programs

o Excellent communication and facilitation skills

Preferred Job Qualifications

* ACLS certification

* Two to three years' experience as an educator

* Experience in developing preceptorship programs, evaluating teaching methods, facilitating quality improvement projects, and participating in research
